The sunflowers in the mural represent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers series (1887-1889). The paintings show sunflowers in all stages of life, from full bloom to withering, and were considered innovative for their use of the yellow spectrum, partly because newly invented pigments made new colors possible. The sunflowers are also a nod to the stunning sunflower season we experience late summer here in New Mexico. It’s such a beautiful time of year to picnic and will be when the mural will have it’s final days on display in the Railyards.
